Here are the 2009 Chowderfest Winners!
 

The winners – by vote of chowder consumers themselves

  • Best On Broadway – Stadium Café

  • Best Off Broadway – Hatties Restaurant

  • Best Non-Downtown - Longfellows Restaurant

  • Best Newcomer – The Local Pub and Teahouse

  • Best Canine – Sloppy Kisses-a treat boutique for dogs

  • Most Chowder Served – Cantina

  • People’s Choice – The Parting Glass

The 11th annual Saratoga Chowderfest (part of the 12th annual Winterfest Weekend) set records for participating chowder outlets, samples of chowder served and  attendance!

This was the largest event ever and included the following highlights:

  • 46 outlets served chowder (up from 36 last year) – including some innovative partnerships and new non-restaurant retailers who joined the Chowder event this year – including Johnny Miller Adventures, Crafters Gallery, Dawgdom, Ever After (partnership with Great Bay Clam Company), Feast Gallery on Beekman Street and Prestwick Chase, which offered horse-drawn carriage rides, ice sculpting and ice skating throughout the day. 

  • 42,743 servings of chowder from 11-4 pm on Saturday the 31st– and several restaurants started early

  • 30,000 biodegradable cups – all gone by mid-day(some in the first two hours).  Donated in partnership with Saratoga Environmental Expo and Sysco Foods

  • 5,000 corn starch spoons, also donated by Environmental Expo

  • Approximately 8,500 people on the street

  • Largest crowd so far for the canine competition – winner of the Dog-Off (decided by Mayor Scott Johnson’s dog,  Dr. Watson) and won for the second year in a row by Impressions of Saratoga

  • Distributed nearly 1,800 tee shirts – up from 1,400 last year

  • Between Jan 1st--Feb 4th, the Bureau's website had 10,847 hits to the Chowderfest page compared to 8,830 hits last year!

Congratulations!

Congrats to Hollis Palmer of Derby Tours of Saratoga for writing a historical book about the Batcheller Mansion. The official release of the book will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 8 at Crafters Gallery on Broadway and Palmer will be available to sign copies of the book. "The Batcheller Mansion" was published by Deep Roots Publications of Saratoga Springs and Palmer plans to put on a presentation about the Batchellers for the Saratoga Springs Historical Society at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 19 at the Saratoga Springs History Museum in Canfield Casino.

 

Wild New Exhibit

This month, The National Bottle Museum presents a photographic exhibit by Cynthia Placek and Linda Wroble called "From New York to Africa". The museum and gallery are open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

 

"Beyond Therapy" comedy

The Home Made Theater presents a satirical play called "Beyond Therapy" at the Spa Little Theater in Saratoga Spa State Park. It starts this Friday at 8:15 p.m. and runs every weekend through March 1st. To purchase tickets, call the box office at 587-4427 or go to www.homemadetheater.com.
