President's Corner

Ideas, initiatives will lead to strategies and actions

It’s really no surprise that pulling together a sampling of sales professionals from Saratoga lodging properties and attractions for a few hours would be a lively affair. Charge them with analyzing what we all do well as a tourism community, and ask them to suggest how we can improve, and they first get a bit contemplative, then energized, and finally downright determined.

That’s what happened last week when the focus was specifically on sales – how to increase the number of groups visiting Saratoga; how to maintain group size and how to prospect for new business. The ideas were flying and the results are pretty much what you’d expect.

This group, first of all, doesn’t want to do things the way they’ve always been done. There was a lot of creative energy and the emphasis was on increased involvement, collaboration, new technology and expanding our reach beyond New York State into regional and even national markets.

This group saw the expansion and renovation of the City Center as a pivotal opportunity to tell the Saratoga story – that our location and the range of activity here makes Saratoga the single best location for a meeting, conference or convention between New York, Boston and Montreal. They see the monumental investment by AMD and the State of New York in the Global Foundries project as another critical chance to position Saratoga as a center for a technology conversation. Build it in Malta, on the north edge of Tech Valley, but let’s have tech-specific conferences hosted in Saratoga, the economic gem of Upstate New York.

This group wants to broaden the backyard marketing concept beyond Saratoga, linking in to connections we have to those who love Saratoga and are willing to recommend the city and the region as a destination for corporate conferences and commerce. That might mean encouraging Skidmore parents to think of other reasons to visit their kids – help bring a meeting here and combine business with some quality time visiting your Skidmore student.

The ideas are endless – putting them in action, that’s the next step, but there’s clearly support, a true sense of community and a willingness to work together to continue contributing to Saratoga economic vitality.

SAVE THE DATE!

The Saratoga Convention & Tourism Bureau is gearing up for Saratoga’s Fifth Annual Restaurant Week!  The dates will be December 4th--December 10th, 2009.  The Bureau advertises this event heavily with the hopes of drawing lots of people to sample our fine restaurants, shop at our fantastic stores and fall in love with Saratoga so they become regular visitors.

In 2008, Restaurant Week was very successful with the inclusion of the lunch option and a total of 38 participating restaurants (up from 26 in 2007).  There were member restaurants participating from as far south as Exit 10 and as far north as Exit 15.  The event saw approximately 8,636 people participate.  From November 20 through December 13 last year, there were 14, 098 views to the Restaurant Week page on the Bureau website.  Impressive numbers to be sure!  If you have any questions about Restaurant Week or how you can get involved, call David, Connie or Angela at 518-584-1531.

Saratoga Springs
City Center Update

The Latest

If you haven’t taken a trip down Broadway to the corner of Ellsworth Jones Place lately, you’re missing a pretty remarkable sight. Construction (well, actually, demolition) has begun on the City Center expansion and renovation and it’s fairly impressive. The large cranes are doing double duty, not only peeling back the copper caps, but also playing a significant role in the removal of bricks from leggy columns in the loggia. Perhaps most astonishing is the fact that demolition and construction will take place while groups continue to meet in the City Center’s convention space and special care is being taken to keep interruptions to an absolute minimum. Next steps, once the columns are removed, is to set in place drainage infrastructure and begin work on the foundation. Stay tuned.

Groundbreaking

At 11 a.m. on Monday, September 14, shovels turned earth in a commemorative ceremony marking the start of a multi-million dollar expansion and renovation of the 25-year old Saratoga Springs City Center. The ceremony took place in the loggia area adjacent to the City Center and Saratoga Hilton.

Jerry Wells, an original member of the City Center Authority, breaks ground with a group deemed the future leaders of Saratoga, children of the people affiliated with the City Center's mission.

The original shovel, used when the City Center was first built in 1983, was used in the ceremony along with smaller shovels for the children.

Sales Update

Boston Trip

The Bureau launched a sales initiative in the Boston market in late September.  Marie Moynihan and Kathy Denkenberger teamed up for two days, while Heather McElhiney and Dave Zunker joined together on a separate mission for a one day trip.  Marie and Kathy met with contacts at Northeast Gas Association, The Supreme Council of the Royal Arcanum, McKenna Management (College Stores etc.), Ameriprise Financial and Northeast Sustainable Energy.  Heather and Dave also covered some solid New England ground.  They visited Tracy Goodwin, New England Fuel Institute, Holly Suzanne Hoak, National Tax Institute and Courtney Stark, Campus Crusade for Christ.

NY Assn. for Pupil Transportation

Patience, persistence, perseverance and perspiration really do equal success! After 23 years (yes, you read that right – 23 years!!) of courting the business, your Convention Bureau is very excited to announce that the New York Association for Pupil Transportation – NYAPT - will be coming to Saratoga Springs! NYAPT had made Albany a permanent home, and the 2009 conference marked their 27th year on Wolf Road. While Saratoga had tried to win this business away from Albany many times over the years, the group ultimately decided not to move. Our most recent bid effort started in March of 2008, with sales manager Heather McElhiney, along with hotel partners, making several sales calls on the Albany headquarters office. We gained the group's attention with news of an expanding City Center – something that was desperately needed if they were to come to Saratoga. Efforts continued throughout the year and into the next, with Kathy Denkenberger and David Zunker getting involved in the courting as well. After several meetings with the Executive Director, three site visits for various members of the NYAPT Board and members of the Annual Conference Planning Committee, extensive hotel and City Center involvement and support, and a group presentation to the NYAPT Board of Directors, we got the news that the board had voted to come to Saratoga for three years! This conference will bring roughly 700 attendees and 1450 room nights each year for three years, starting in July of 2010. We are all very excited to welcome NYAPT to Saratoga!

Chamber Showcase

On Thursday, October 1, 2009  Kathy Denkenberger and Connie Crudo exhibited at the Saratoga Chamber’s Annual Business Showcase.   This is an awesome networking opportunity for not only the bureau and our current members, but potential new members as well.

Convention Bureau Servicing

It has been a very busy fall season so far with servicing all of the groups that are holding their conventions in our city.  Kathy Denkenberger spoke with the Northeast Dairy Foods Association and explained to their spouse group all there is to see and do in Saratoga.

Saratoga Specialties Company is “Growing Green”

Saratoga Specialties Company is pleased to announce that they have just received FDA certification to use an inert (nitrogen) gas flush system to dramatically extend the shelf life of their hand crafted Moon Brand Original Saratoga Chips™ while reducing waste and their impact on the environment.

“This process is just another step along the path of our pledge to continually improve our product, service and quality”, said Dan Jameson, of Saratoga Specialties Company. “While the new equipment, certification, and process of implementation of this state of the art Nitrogen Flush System (NFS) can be difficult to navigate and a bit costly, we believe the return on investment for our retailers, our customers, and most importantly, our environment will be well worth our effort and expense.”

This development is just one of a series of steps Saratoga Specialties Company is taking to ensure that we will be a strong, ecologically responsible corporate citizen now and in the future.

Saratoga Specialties Company has reintroduced the Moon Brand Original Saratoga Chips™ in a reproduction of the original packaging from 1853 found at the Saratoga Springs History Museum. The Saratoga Chips are hand crafted in individual batches by gourmet artisans just as they were originally. Moon’s Brand Original Saratoga Chips™ come in both a 9oz family size and a 1.5oz single serving.

Adirondack Museum
"Goes Purple" for Domestic Violence Awareness

The historic fire tower that once stood on top of Whiteface Mountain shined out with purple light on Saturday, October 3rd as the Adirondack Museum at Blue Mountain Lake, New York "went purple" to promote awareness of domestic violence.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month in New York State. 2008 was the inaugural year in the effort to "Shine a Light on Domestic Violence" by turning the state purple. Purple lights illuminated landmarks such as Niagara Falls, the Mid-Hudson Bridge, and the Empire State Building for a day, a week, or the entire month of October.

This year the NYS Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence (OPDV) has set the goal of purple participation in every county in New York State. The Adirondack Museum was asked to represent Hamilton County
