January 2010

       Looking Ahead – Welcome 2010!

They say you should not look back – only ahead – but I would like to take a moment to look back on 2009 and reflect on all the good things that happened throughout the year.

2009 was a challenging year, attendance was down at many conventions but the good news is – they still came! We experienced this past year what many cities have felt for the last 2-3 years. Overall, we all survived and are looking forward to a solid 2010.

Our sales team attended 4 major trade shows throughout the year. We hosted a FAM Tour in July with 19 clients. In August, we proudly showed our city to the President of Destination Marketing Association International – who had never been here and spent 3 days with us.

Our membership numbers stayed strong – 400 – which is a record high for us.

Chowderfest and Restaurant week were more successful than in previous years with record numbers participating.

Our Annual Meeting, Golf Tournament and Thanksgiving Reception where we recognized 19 Hometown Heroes were all very successful events.

To all of this, we say THANK YOU – to YOU, our membership for your continued support of our efforts to market our beautiful city to convention groups – whether they be local, state, regional, national or international – last year we hosted all of them.

As we look to 2010 – we do so with much optimism – the economy is getting stronger. We will celebrate our 25th anniversary of the bureau in March at our Annual Meeting. Our membership remains strong. We have over 25 groups booked with 500 or more attendees anticipated, plus many, many more with 200 – 500 attendees. This is great news for all of us. There will be people sleeping in our hotel rooms, eating at our fabulous restaurants, shopping in our retail stores, visiting our world famous attractions, museums, parks, golf courses, and using the services of all those in and around our beautiful city. And, how exciting is it that after many years of planning, our Saratoga Springs City Center is expanding! We will finally have more room for all those groups who have “outgrown” our meeting and exhibit space.

Please take a moment to look around us, reflect a moment and say "Wow" – we live and work in a great city, with great people – and we are thankful for all of this.

We wish you a Happy, Healthy, Prosperous 2010! We are truly blessed!

Kathy Denkenberger and the entire staff at the SCTB!

Sales Update

Happy New Year everyone! Your Convention Bureau Sales and Services team is looking forward to a productive, eventful and fruitful 2010. We will continue to “take our show on the road” , promoting Saratoga as near as Albany and as far as Washington DC and all points in between. While Albany sales calls will continue to be a weekly occurrence, Marie and Heather will also be traveling to Boston, Westchester County, New York City, and Northern/Central New Jersey throughout the year, meeting with both established and potential clients. We will also consider traveling to other locals as business opportunities dictate.

Looking to the immediate future, Kathy Denkenberger and Marie Moynihan will be traveling to Massachusetts to represent Saratoga at the New England Society of Association Executives Annual Meeting and Trade Show 2010 – a show that has been a success for us in past years. Sales calls are planned along this journey to Boston. Additionally, Marie and hotel partners will be traveling to Washington DC in late February for the Destination Marketing Association International’s annual Destinations Showcase Conference and Expo. Again, Marie will take this opportunity to meet with past and potential clients while in the DC market. Both of these expos will be an excellent way to showcase the exciting expansion of our City Center to prospective clients. This indeed will be a major focus!

Scott Beale of Grey Gelding Bistro & Bar has been in a National Chef Challenge over the past few months for Firestone Winery in California. He recently made it to the top three position, which sends him to Santa Barbara on January 10th to compete in a very intense cook-off being judged by Food Network and guest chefs!

He will be competing against two chefs out of Chicago. This is a very big accomplishment for Scott as well as a chance for Saratoga Springs to shine.
