Residence Inn by Marriott Saratoga Springs offering complimentary handicapping course

Saturday mornings during track to guests of the Residence Inn and Courtyard.

The handicapping instructor is Jim Melia, who was a banker by profession, but also a 40 year veteran of playing the ponies. He offers the basics of betting and helps guests to move from the $1.00 ‘to win’ bet to ‘boxing’ and ‘trifectas’.

Classes begin at 9:00AM which leaves plenty of time for everyone to review the races of the day, and take the complimentary hotel shuttle to the Track by post time. We’re not saying that it will always happen this way, but Jim has offered his picks for the day and guests have won enough to pay for their stay at the hotel!

Jim is also a tour guide for National Museum of Racing and does an amazing tour of the Oklahoma Track during the summer months.

Glimmerglass Festival Returns to the Adirondack Museum

Enjoy an elegant evening of opera and musical theater at the Adirondack Museum, Blue Mountain Lake, New York, on August 9, 2011. Following its debut at the museum last summer, The Glimmerglass Festival returns with members of their acclaimed Young Artists Program for an evening of extraordinary music and a sunset picnic.

This year's program is entitled, "There's No Business Like Show Business." Irving Berlin, the composer of "Annie Get Your Gun," was one of many writers whose songs for the stage have had a second life in the "Great American Songbook." In this program, the performers will explore some lesser-known-but wonderful-selections from the works of Berlin, Porter, Arlen, Gershwin, and more!

DZ Restaurants Wants Its Guests To Be More Reserved

For the first time David Zecchini, owner of DZ Restaurants, will begin taking limited reservations and using OpenTable at all of his current restaurant locations; Chianti Il Ristorante and Forno Bistro in Saratoga Springs and Pasta Pane Rustic Italian Bistro in Clifton Park.

OpenTable is a leading provider of free, real-time online restaurant reservations for diners and reservation and guest management solutions for restaurants.

Part of the charm and appeal of a DZ Restaurant was a seating policy that has been described as ‘first come, first serve’; a seating policy that encouraged walk-ins and gave every guest an equal chance to get a table on any given night. However, it was in response to increasing guest requests, that DZ Restaurants has decided to open its reservation books.

Sales and Services Updates

For two days in June, Heather traveled with Destinations of New York State for a Group Tour and Travel Sales Blitz.  The blitz brought Saratoga to 14 tour operators in the CT/MA area.  Many of the operators are bringing groups to Saratoga for day trips and are pleased with their experiences.  It is the bureaus goal to persuade the operators to consider new options for Saratoga, such as for overnights, mid week tours, tours outside of racing season , or attending one of our special events.  We have been having great success in getting tour operators to allow us to prepare a competitive package that rivals other tour in our area in both entertainment and monetary value. Thank you to all of our members who help make our group travel sales efforts a success!

We had a great month in July with all the groups that held their conventions here.

We are gearing up for all of our Fall groups and beyond.  Don’t forget – we are still accepting applications for volunteers.

Bureau volunteers, Christine and Cheryl, helped out at the Datag conference, July 12-15, 2011 at the Saratoga Hilton!

JIMAPCO's Map Room

With maps everywhere these days – on your phone, on your computer, in your car, and even in your glove box, people have become more and more reliant on seeing “location” as part of the information they are seeking.  Whether it’s the location of a new restaurant, the geography of business territories, or the distribution of customers, “LOCATION! LOCATION! LOCATION!” couldn’t be more important!  See a photo of the maproom, click here!

JIMAPCO, Inc., the region’s leading publisher and distributor of retail maps, has responded to the digital demand with its new Map Room and it’s B2B Dynamic Mapping Services.  A public online resource, The Map Room offers users a variety of unique free maps, each interactive, each relating interesting information about the region.  Maps illustrating school districts, tax rates, demographic information, and even information about where to eat, sleep and golf are now  featured in JIMAPCO’s Map Room. Currently focused on the Capital Region, JIMAPCO plans to expand the concept to other areas in coming months.

While JIMAPCO’s Map Room presents a wealth of public information, JIMAPCO’s cartographers also prepare private and secure customized online interactive maps for businesses wishing to visualize their business data.  Territories, sales, customers, and services can be mapped in layers, and put online on a secure, private site.  Enormously helpful in seeing patterns and relationships, one customer commented that “One map is worth a thousand spreadsheets!”

The Map Room offers a variety of ideas for how maps might help you learn more about the region, or give you ideas about how maps might help your business.  The Map Room is always changing, so visitors are urged to return often.  Visit the Map Room at, www.jimapco.com/maproom.
