  Saratoga Springs City Center Update

The Saratoga Springs City Center expansion construction is coming to a close. The official ribbon cutting ceremony is taking place prior to the start of Saratoga’s Flag Day parade on June 11th at 11: 00 a.m.   The majority of work left to be done is on the exterior of the City Center building. Panels are going up
to finish off each entry way, along with the glass for the lighted main entry and the new lettering on the canopy.  As the interior construction comes to a close, other renovation projects will start. The Main Hall is expected to get an overhaul, with a new sound system in the works, as well as some acoustical upgrades.

On September 11th of this year, the City Center  is unveiling a sculpture, made from the steel of the
World Trade Center, named “Tempered by Memory” to commemorate the 10th anniversary of 9/11.

 Sales and Services Updates

The Bureau is gearing up for ESSAE's Annual Conference and Expo at the Saratoga Springs City Center on this Thursday, June 2nd. www.essae.org. Click here to View the ESSAE Brochure!

We will be sponsoring the after party at MPI NENY’s annual Golfapalooza at Saratoga National on June 7th This will benefit the Alzheimer’s Association and is a great opportunity to get out for an afternoon and evening of networking fun with meeting professionals and hospitality partners from the industry. There are still opportunities to participate as a sponsor, golfer or for the after party.

Heather and hoteliers recently spent several weeks planning, organizing and executing a very effective western New York group tour sales blitz.  The blitz took place May 17-19, and brought the bureau and three lodging properties to 14 cities and towns to see 17 group tour operators. Heather and a hotelier departed early Tuesday morning and saw companies from Watertown to Binghamton. The second day of the trip brought Heather to companies between Endicott and Batavia, while  a second group of hoteliers left Saratoga bright and early to work companies between Hinckley and Rochester.  Day three culminated with a lunch for group tour operators in the Buffalo and western NY area, and then one final sales call just outside of Rochester on our return trip.  We worked hard to confirm appointments prior to the trip, and were eagerly received by those we met with.  We found that our neighbors to the west know a only a fraction of what Saratoga has to offer their group tour clients. Many of the operators were  pleasantly surprised by all of the business opportunities Saratoga offers them, and Heather will be following up with sample itineraries specific to the wants and needs we learned about during our meetings.  Many companies were impressed that Saratoga representatives took the time to travel to see them and we will continue to build on that relationship foundation for the benefit of all.  If you are interested in contributing to a future group tour sales blitz, please contact Heather at the Bureau to discuss how you can be involved!

Marie Moynihan hosted NYS Holstein Executive Director, Patsy Gifford, and Committee co-chair, Becky King for a site visit showcasing the recently completed expansion of the City Center.  Saratoga is being considered as the host destination for the 2016 National Holstein Association’s national convention.  Becky and her husband Jeff King of the King Dairy Farm have been instrumental in promoting Saratoga for this event which will bring over 400 attendees from the industry.

Marie continues to prepare for the AIBTM conference in Baltimore in late June in an effort promote Saratoga on a national level. Marie and Kathy Denkenberger are busy preparing for the upcoming NESAE 2011 Annual Meeting to be held in Newport Road Island.  Joanne Kirkpatrick of the Holiday Inn Saratoga will team up with them in their efforts to showcase Saratoga to meeting professionals and association executives from the New England area.

The Saratoga Convention & Tourism Bureau will hold a Group Tour Roundtable at 10:00AM on Wednesday, June 29th. We invite all members who have an interest in gaining group tour business to attend this meeting.  The bureau will discuss  feedback we have received from group tour operators we have met at recent tradeshow and sales appointments, we will discuss some of the hot topics in the group tour industry both nationally and specific to Saratoga,  and discuss our plans and needs moving forward.  We welcome ideas, questions and input from all of our members and hope you will participate in this important meeting.  This meeting will be held at the SCTB offices, unless attendance exceeds capacity, at which time an alternate venue will be immediately announced.  Please RSVP to Heather McElhiney, 518.584.1531 or heather@discoversaratoga.org,  prior to end of day Wednesday, June 22nd, 2011.  Thank you!

Congrats to Marie Moynihan, Senior Sales Manager at the Bureau; she is MPI NENY's April Star of the Month! http://mpineny.org/

Convention Services

We have had a very busy May with group business! Some of the groups we have worked directly with this month include:

NYS Speech Language & Hearing Association – they had great attendance and as always, love Saratoga

NY Rural Water Assn.-  Like they did two years ago – this group held another Dine Around for two of their evening meals.

Kathy Denkenberger and Angela LaTerra traveled to Seattle in May for the annual Passkey/GroupMax users conference.  This is a new housing system the Bureau is now using and we are very excited to get started.  This system is going to enable us to offer efficient housing services that will benefit not only the lodging properties they are using but the client as well!

Giving Back To The Community

DZ Restaurants and Rebuilding Together Saratoga County partnered in May on a project to assist Franklin Community Center in Saratoga Springs. As part of their “DZ Volunteers – Giving Back to the Community” program, 25 volunteers from DZ Restaurants worked at and painted three different facilities run by Franklin Community Center.

“Giving back to the community is extremely important to everyone at our restaurants. We take a day to get together, roll up our sleeves, and volunteer for a cause close to our hearts.” said Jeremy Ganisin, restaurant manager at Chianti Il Ristorante.
“Rebuilding Together is thankful for the efforts of the volunteers from DZ Restaurants, who use their days off to assist those in need,” expressed Executive Director Michelle Larkin from Rebuilding Together Saratoga County “The DZ crew was a pleasure to work with and I look forward to partnering with them in the future.”
