Message from the President...

February was an exciting month for us here in Saratoga. We had a record Chowderfest on the 5th when we welcomed more than 14,000 people to the streets of Saratoga where they sampled chowder from a record, 73 vendors. More than 70,000 bowls of chowder were served…another record!! This annual event has grown to be one of the most popular events in the Northeast. Hat’s off to Connie Crudo and the entire bureau Team, along with all of the volunteers, participants and the City of Saratoga Springs for making this event a success! We’re already hard at work planning next year’s event and expect to break records once again.
February also saw the Bureau take a tremendous step forward on the convention services side with two new additions to our “tool box”. First, we took possession of our new Conference Kiosk that will help welcome conference attendees at their headquarters property and provide delegates with key area information while here during their entire stay. This touch-screen, interactive tool will offer translated information, in several languages, details on area attractions with printable maps and even discount coupons to area shops and restaurants. We also implemented and were trained on our new online group housing tool. The Bureau entered a three year agreement with Passkey to utilize their GroupMax tool for city-wide conferences and large sports events. This tool will ensure conference delegates, exhibitors and other attendees stay at contracted properties thus eliminating the loss of room nights to properties outside the area and the group’s designated room block. Both of these tools benefit our group clients and our destination partners alike. We continue to elevate our service levels to separate Saratoga from our competition.
As we go into March and April, we will be announcing additional partnerships and tools that will further enhance our sales & service capabilities. Saratoga continues to develop and evolve as a global destination and we are excited to compete for, and win, new business for our members!

Sales and Services Update
|
The Bureau Sales team have been on the road near and far and is looking forward to more face time with our current and potential clients. In February, Marie attended and exhibited at Destination Showcase in Washington DC meeting with both corporate and association clients. . The Bureau team celebrated with fellow hospitality professionals and association executives at the ESSAE Annual Dinner & Awards Banquet on February 8th in Albany. Marie Moynihan is serving on the MPI Golfapalooza committee as sponsorship chair. This tournament will be held at Saratoga National Golf Club on June 7th. Once again, this event will benefit the Alzheimer’s Association. If you’d like an opportunity to participate as a sponsor please contact Marie at the Bureau for details. Marie and Heather attended the MPI NENY event “HOT TECHNOLOGIES IN THE MEETING INDUSTRY” in Troy this month. This was a terrific program focused on the latest and greatest in technology and how we can apply this to our own business and success.
March will find Marie in Washington DC again for the Conference Direct show, another popular corporate and association business show where she will be able to meet and greet more new prospects for Destination Saratoga! Heather will attend the ABA/OMCA Group Tour summit at the end of March, and then the Destinations of New York Group travel Show in April. Both of these shows are geared to the group tour market and we are excited to be participating.
April will also find Heather in North Carolina for the National Association of Sports Commissions Sports event symposium, a weeklong show focused on the sports industry. This show not only offers education, peer to peer networking and best practices seminars, but also one-on-one scheduled appointments with event rights holders. Heather and Marie are excited about the progress and connections we have made and are looking forward to all of 2011 being just as productive!

Convention Services
February started off right where January left off – cold and snow. That did not deter our groups from coming to Saratoga for their scheduled meetings. Empire State College held their Residency program at the Saratoga Hilton. This year brought a new concept to them for their lunch – a “lunch around” as we called it. It proved to be very successful and also showed us that even on the coldest days in February – folks still want to get out and explore and get a taste of our beautiful city.
Dance Flurry – once again took us by storm. Advanced ticket sales were up by 8% this year. We were fortunate to have had a “snow free” (meaning no storms) weekend. The new space at the City Center was a true joy for all of the dancers.
Empire State Baptist Congress also returned to Saratoga – bringing hundreds of guests and they also – really enjoyed our newly added City Center space.
We are looking forward to the newest edition of our Ultimate Saratoga Map – this map is a valuable tool for our convention attendees as they navigate around our city. Also – don’t forget to bring us any additional coupons, etc. you want available to convention delegates. We’ll be happy to make sure the groups receive them.
