Saratoga Horse Racing

If you want to experience the true spirit of horse racing, there's no better place than Saratoga Springs. The sport’s history runs deep here, dating back to 1847 when trotting races took place on a dirt track later known as “Horse Haven” along Union Avenue. This early passion for racing set the stage for Saratoga’s enduring love affair with the sport.

Witnessing the growing popularity of horse racing, former bare-knuckle boxing champion John Morrissey staged the first formal Thoroughbred race meeting in 1863 at the old trotting course. Recognizing the potential for the future of the sport, Morrissey then brought in some high-society partners, expanded the racing calendar, and built a new, larger track in 1864 — the site of the present-day Saratoga Race Course. Saratoga quickly became a renowned racing destination, attracting avid fans and top-tier horses from across the country!

Saratoga Race Course: A Legacy of Excellence

Today, Saratoga Race Course, managed by the New York Racing Association, continues this proud legacy. Every summer, from mid-July to Labor Day, it hosts some of the most prestigious races in America. As the oldest racetrack in the country, it holds a unique place in the history of the sport. It’s no wonder Sports Illustrated recognized its significance, naming it one of the Top 10 sporting venues in the United States.

Beyond the accolades, Saratoga Race Course offers a unique experience: the vintage grandstands, the sprawling grounds, and the palpable excitement on race day. Imagine the rush as powerful horses race toward the finish line and the crowd’s energy surging like a wave! That’s the magic of Saratoga, a tradition that connects you to the sport’s past and fuels the excitement of the present.

Explore Racing History at the National Museum

For those seeking a deeper dive into racing history, the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame, located across the street from the track, offers a journey through the legends and milestones of horse racing. It’s the perfect complement to a day at the races, providing context and inspiration.

Aside from Thoroughbred racing, Saratoga Springs has been home to what is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful harness tracks in the country since 1941. What is affectionately known as Saratoga Harness, is located at Saratoga Casino Hotel where the race cards continue to attract some of the top pacers and trotters from throughout the Northeast. The live harness racing season runs from February through December and fans who have spanned generations can view live races outside at the rail, in the lower clubhouse, in the grandstand or while dining at Lucky Joe’s. Plus, guests can watch and wager on live horse racing from tracks around the country in their mezzanine or SaratogaBets Simulcast Center.

Saratoga invites everyone — from experienced race fans to curious newcomers — to experience the thrill (and timeless tradition) of horse racing!
